The Elasticity Of Imagination!

http://cydonian.com/photos/data/media/192/matrix_127.jpg

What's the role of gadgets in our life?

Do these devices diminish our creativity? Or, are these conducive to divergent thinking?

There are all kinds of arguments. I want to share my experience with you.

Back in 1993, I was an MBA student in Ujjain. Summer training was mandatory, and everyone was excited after our first experience in the real life corporate world.

Everyone had something special to share.

But one moment is still stuck in my mind. A friend told us,

"You know, you put your document here in the machine and it will come out in other city as it is!"

"What?"
"Really!"
"Nice joke!"

All of us didn't believe it.

He was talking about this new miracle called FAX!

I thought he was simply creating a story to impress us. Even the name FAX didn't sound credible for such a miracle machine.

Later on I joined Clarion advertising agency in Mumbai and became a proud user of FAX myself. I am saying so, because it was a special thing. Not everyone was allowed to use the FAX machine.

I am sure FAX machines exist even today. Though I haven't used one for last 10 years.

In these years a lot have changed. Yesterday I was discussing with my son about various new ideas in science. I told him scientists are working on projects to make us invisible. He instantly believed it. In fact he had his own ideas about how it can be done.

When I asked him about virtual travel, he paused for a while but then he nodded. He believes it can be done.

And today I too believe things are possible.

In childhood, I read a news story and didn't believe it. It was about edible mushrooms. I thought, "How can someone eat mushrooms!"

Today it's my favorite dish!

The change is not just about our phones becoming mobile. It's not just about new gadgets, it's not just about liking and sharing on social media.

The real change I see is in the elasticity of our imagination. Today we believe almost everything is possible.

Aren't you ready for the flying bikes? Cameras that can shoot smells?

Sneezing without closing your eyes?

With best wishes,

India, Where Are Those Candles?

I am wondering where are the candles?

When terrorists attacked on 26/11 We saw huge candle march. After the Nirbhaya tragedy we saw a huge gathering of youths in Delhi and all over the country.

I ask where are the candles now?

If we really want to make the difference, this is the time to burn those candles.

Think about it. A traffic policeman doing his duty gets beaten up by the MLAs in the corridors of legislative assembly in Maharashtra. And he gets suspended for doing his duty!

A newspaper report says Police department has asked their personnel not to push the matters on road if powerful people are involved.

In another case a traffic volunteer on duty challenges another politician and her services are terminated.

Honest IAS officer Khemka is transferred once again. Why? He has the courage to challenge the corrupt system.

Ask ourselves a question, why will any officer do his duty if he will be punished and humiliated like this. And all of us keep mum.

Do we expect  a psychologically crippled policeman to become a fighter by some magic, when the gun triggering terrorists appear on the road?

Every time a honest man doing his duty is punished and humiliated  it makes a deeper dent on the system. A Khemka can keep his resilience and keep on fighting but this humiliation is in reality a message for all others to follow the line. And they follow.

A slap on one traffic cop's face is a warning to all other cops to remove the barricades.

It is also an invitation to Kasabs and their friends: "Do come! we won't stop you! We don't have the courage!"

It makes a huge difference when we burn the candles! Will we burn it now, or wait for the worst to happen?
